To the Editor:
The Dartmouth has recently published two articles containing information about activities allegedly taking place at 8 Webster Avenue, a facility owned by the Zeta Psi alumni corporation. The articles have correctly reported that the College withdrew recognition from the Zeta Psi fraternity last spring as a result of significant conduct issues. However, it is important for students to understand that the College's Standards of Conduct apply to the actions of individual students and, as stated in the Student Handbook (p. 158), "govern the behavior of individual students ... on or off campus."
By accepting membership in the Dartmouth community, individual students agree to be held accountable to the Dartmouth Community Standards of Conduct and, as such, misconduct on or off the campus, in college-owned or privately-owned facilities, is subject to disciplinary action by the College.
I commend The Dartmouth for making information available to the public about the activities allegedly taking place at 8 Webster Avenue. Awareness about the concerns raised in recent articles may encourage action by local authorities, the Zeta Psi alumni corporation, the Zeta Psi national organization and others. I encourage any member of this community who has information about activities that might compromise the health and safety of students to share that information with Safety and Security.
