Perpetuating the System

To the Editor:

Not a bad guest column by Kate Greenwood (The Dartmouth, Jan. 30, "System Failure"), but it begs a greater question:

Why do all these people need fraternity/sorority-type organizations in the first place? Why is the campus populated by people so desperate for instant friendships that they will subject themselves to nearly any amount of humiliation and kow-towing so as to fit in?

The ability of these groups to exclude only exists because people continue to grant them that power; those who rush perpetuate the system. Don't rush and the houses will adopt other criteria or wither away.

It may not seem that way while the pain of rejection is still fresh, but Ms. Greenwood's friend is far better off without the dubious benefits of the sorority system. At least her ability to think for herself will remain intact.
