Although Safety and Security encountered no major incidents over Winter Carnival, College Proctor Bob McEwen described the weekend as "very busy."
The total number of alcohol-related incidents increased this year to 28, a figure which includes 16 inebriates and several cases each of possession and unattended alcohol. Last year, Safety and Security reported 20 alcohol violations.
Damage to windows and exterior door locks contributed to a total of five cases of vandalism, one more than last year's total. McEwen noted that this figure may rise if Safety and Security discovers additional damage as buildings open up for the week today.
In all, 64 complaints came in, a small bump up from last year's total of 52. Both figures represent a considerable increase over the totals of 37 incidents in 1999 and 30 in 2000.
Favorable weather conditions helped the weekend to pass without major injuries of any kind, according to McEwen. The absence of serious incidents "speaks well" of the weekend, he said.
McEwen said that despite differences in climate and scheduled activities, approximately the same number of incidents occur during Winter Carnival weekends as during Green Key and Homecoming.
After Green Key weekend last year, Safety and Security reported a total of 50 incidents.
He expressed appreciation for the help Safety and Security received from students calling in with concerns about intoxicated friends needing medical attention.
In other incidents, one student filed a noise complaint after a residence hall party got out of hand and another student violated fire-safety code by using a fire extinguisher. McEwen described everyone in the former case as "cooperative."
Several students were cited for motor vehicle violations. A couple of students also called in to report that persons had entered their rooms, but none of these cases were of a threatening nature.
