Panhell Council elects new execs

Ann Chang '03 and Shevani Jaisingh '03 will assume leadership of the Panhellenic Council as president and vice-president, respectively, beginning Feb. 1.

Chang, a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, is excited about the chance to make the sororities seem increasingly open to women from outside the system.

"A lot of women don't even know where some houses are before rush, and stereotypes perpetuate themselves," she said. "The fraternities are much more open to the rest of campus.

Chang also wants to improve communication among the sororities. She pointed to a flag football game, in which the three national houses competed against the three local houses, as a well-organized event which helped bring women from different houses together.

Jaisingh, a member of Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority and a former member of The Dartmouth staff, said that most of her responsibilities as vice-president will involve planning rush.

She does not foresee significantly changing the rush process, she said.

Both Chang and Jaisingh noted that Panhell will begin working immediately on planning spring rush.

Chang said that there should be a fair amount of continuity between winter and spring rush this year, as many of last year's executives will be around to finish planning rush.

Both women are active in various other organizations on campus.

Chang is a member of Campus Crusade for Christ, the Navigators and Asian Christian fellowship, she volunteers at the children's hospital at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and serves as Kappa's philanthropy chair.

Jaisingh serves as Sisterhood Chair at EKT.

New officers were also selected for other positions. Chang noted that the full spectrum of sororities is better represented this year.

Maureen Ellinwood '03 of Alpha Xi Delta sorority was elected treasurer and Jillian Garcia '04 of Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority and Dara Adams '04 of Sigma Delta sorority were elected programing chairs.

Filling other positions are Kristen White '04 of Alpha Xi at secretary, Amy Benziger '04 of KDE as publicity chair and Claire Superfine '04 of Sigma Delt as new member education chair. Christine Sebourn '03 of Delta Delta Delta sorority will serve on the Judiciary Council,

Tasha Francis '02, the outgoing president, was especially pleased with the number of sophomore women who won positions.

"We'll have a number of very experienced leaders next year," she said.
