To the Editor:
Director of Career Services Skip Sturman's op-ed on the "Perils of Misrepresentation" (Nov. 12, 2001) illustrates the quandary in which college students seeking jobs now find themselves. While outright lying on resumes and cover letters is reprehensible, does the hiring process itself not implicitly support inflation or embellishment of credentials? The line certainly blurs.
It is sometimes difficult to sympathize with the corporations that recruit at Dartmouth. They contribute to many students' anxiety and ultimately benefit very few. That this particular student in Sturman's piece had suicidal thoughts over his mistake is saddening and revealing. Is it time to study the influence corporations have on Dartmouth's campus culture?
