Errors in Judgment

To the Editor:

I read "An End to Terrorism" (Letter to the Editor, Sept. 27) by Robert Allgyer '00 and felt disturbed by two gaps in logic. The first is that because the United States has waited at least two weeks to respond (that we're aware of), that we have demonstrated that we won't take misguided actions. President Bush and his advisors have consistently been working to generate a desire for violent vengeance and to prepare people for when it comes. The right to assassinate people without bringing them to trial has been discussed, as have been bombings which will most likely kill civilians. I fear that the waiting has been more reflective of the fact that we don't know bin Laden's precise location and have yet to solidify international Arab support. The second is that Allyger seems to make punishment equivalent to violence. Those of us who support non-violence agree that those responsible for these attacks must be apprehended and punished. However, we believe that fair trials and incarceration are the humane and just solutions.
