Key-Card Locks Worrisome

To the Editor:

Regarding the August 14th article "Door locks set for winter," prior to the institution of key-card controlled door locks for residence halls and academic buildings, students and other community members deserve a full disclosure of the ways in which the new system will be used. For example, will the college monitor individuals' movements between buildings? Will that information be used in conduct hearings? Will students have access to all residence halls or only their own? With regards to academic buildings: who will set policy concerning who may enter and when?

Door locks will be an important component of security at Dartmouth. At the same time, The College will need to examine the ways in which they may affect other aspects of student life.
