To the Editor:
In reference to Matt Soriano's editorial "Equality for All?" in the July 17 Op-Ed section -- I sincerely hope that I missed some aspect of satire in the piece. Otherwise, I am genuinely sickened and perplexed by his point-of-view.
Mr. Soriano is the one creating logical absurdities here. Burnett's callous killing of a dog as revenge in a traffic incident should not be likened to a carnivorous diet or to killing a deer in the road. I doubt Burnett was looking for a snack when he threw a living creature to its death, and most people don't "aim" for a deer in the road, but rather kill it accidentally.
Mr. Soriano seems to belittle the crime of animal cruelty. Perhaps he is ignorant of the fact that nearly all serial killers start out with animal cruelty. The ability to blatantly destroy a life for NO reason is a cause for concern, just as I am concerned that Mr. Soriano cannot see this. It has nothing to do with 'expansion of the franchise of humanity.'
As far as his other ridiculous extrapolations go, I think he has too little faith in others' intellects. Likening protection of the testes to protection of the unborn? Please! No, our society isn't going to go that far.
