Where Has The Faculty Gone?

To the Editor:

I am appalled at the faculty's continuing attempts to appear as if there is not even a single member in support of the Greek system. With only 92 of the nearly 400 faculty members voting in the last several motions to abolish the Greek system, it is easy to assume that the other 300 odd faculty members are either too intimidated by these belligerent members of their "club" or that they are silent because they do not care. That, unfortunately for the vocal minority, makes their statement worthless as a voice for the faculty as a whole. There are many faculty members who must support the Greek system, considering that each Greek house has a faculty advisor. If these advisors do not support the system, they would necessarily discontinue their advisorships, which they have not done.

I feel the faculty and The Dartmouth have been irresponsible in their representation of the outcomes of these recent votes. I know for a fact (from conversations with faculty members while still a student last year) that there are members of the faculty that feel they are unable to let their voices be heard due to the current tone of their leadership. This is a close parallel to some of the more terrible crimes of which the Greek system itself has been accused. The Greek houses have been accused of suppressing dissention among its own members, but apparently the faculty are much more effective at this "game." There are many known dissenters among the Greeks, but there are none among the faculty who are willing to come forward. I challenge these single-minded faculty leaders to release their years-long stranglehold on their organization's leadership positions and allow for a more diverse, representative group of members to come forward and lead. This is no less than what the faculty themselves have charged the Greek system with doing, and it's time they led by example.
