The Dartmouth

Meet vice-presidential candidate Michael Newton

Q: What things need to be improved on campus? How will you address these problems and in what order?

A: The biggest problem that I see is the lack of a student organizational structure. Groups are spread all over this campus and there is no forum for discussion and representation. Systemic change is almost impossible to come by. I would turn the Assembly into that representative forum so all students could utilize it as a means for positive and constructive change. Once this has been achieved, the Assembly could tackle successfully issues like campus diversity, gender relations, social alternatives and more.

Q: What failings do you have and how will you make up for them?

A: As a freshman, I will be a sophomore in a position that is traditionally held by upperclassmen. I am confident, however, that I am the best person for the job and that my age will not be an issue. Through my dedication to the task, my campus knowledge and experience at Dartmouth, I am able to work with all members of the community.

Q: What would you tell the Class of 2005 about Dartmouth?

A: Take advantage of all the incredible opportunities Dartmouth has to offer. Try everything and do anything -- sleep is overrated. Despite the great time you will have, always work to improve the institution and yourself. Never take anything for granted.

Q: What can you offer that your opponents can't?

I think that anyone who has met me can attest to my immense dedication to SA and my true passion for the job. I think that one of my biggest assets comes from being an '04. Compared to my opponents, not only do I have the most relevant experience for the job but I also have an the tremendous enthusiasm that I often referred to as "Freshman Fire."

Q: How can Student Assembly be improved?

A: One way the Assembly that can be improved is by increasing communication between itself and the student body. Historically, this type of communication has been lacking. By developing a comprehensive method of communication with every student and every organization, the Assembly's efficacy can be maximized.
