The Dartmouth

Meet vice-presidential candidate Amit Anand

Q: What things need to be improved on campus? How will you address these problems and in what order?

A: One of the most important things that needs to be improved on campus is the need for student voice in the College's decision making process, as well as the need for additional student-controlled social space. I will constantly lobby the administration for new outlets for use by students and student organizations. We need a free-standing space that all students can use for activities, including parties open to the campus. The College needs to recognize an organization through which all students can express their opinions and to which the administration will be accountable.

Q: What can you offer that your opponents can't?

A: I have a good mix of an insider's experience on how the SA works, the issues that SA has tackled over the last few years and the kinds of reforms that are currently under way. I also have an outsider's perspective, as I have been away from SA for two terms and have gotten a chance to hear what students not involved with SA think.

Q: What failings do you have and how will you make up for them?

A: I feel that there are some reforms that I plan to propose that will be controversial. At the same time, I strongly believe that they are good for the SA in the long run, and I plan to convince those reluctant to adopt those structural reforms that they will indeed result in a more effective institution.

Q: How can Student Assembly be improved?

A: I believe that an inclusive membership policy will result in a more effective SA. We are not the Senate that people elect and expect to be fully accountable to their constituencies. People are able to devote varying degrees of time and energy to SA and I feel that it should be easier for those who want to make a difference on this campus to do so.

Q: What would you tell the Class of 2005 about Dartmouth?

A: I would tell the '05s that Dartmouth is a place where there is something for everyone. Granted, some people will find themselves happier at the College than others, but in the end, I feel that most people have an incredible experience after four years here.
