Trustees to focus on SLI issues

Discussion of the Student Life Initiative is expected to be a hot topic at this weekend's once-a-term meeting of the Trustees of the College.

However, neither Chairman of the Board of Trustees Bill King nor Dean of the College James Larimore expect any major announcements to come out of the conference.

"There is nothing unusual that will be on the agenda with a couple of exceptions," King said, citing an active discussion of the Initiative as one such exception.

Dean of Residential Life Martin Redman is expected to provide the board with an update of the progress of the Greek Life Steering Committee. Yet because the committee's report is still in draft form, it will not yet be officially presented to the board.

King anticipates that the Trustees will devote considerable time to what he referred to as "peripheral issues of the SLI," such as the improvement and construction of academic facilities and student residences.

The Trustees will also hear the annual report of the Student Assembly and receive updates on the College's current design for financial and academic planning.

Despite the board meeting's expected heavy focus on issues surrounding the Initiative, Larimore said he expects the weekend will be primarily an opportunity to regroup and debrief rather than to create new plans.

"I personally am not expecting any major announcements," he said.

King said he expects that the future of the Life Sciences at the College will be another weighty subject.

"This is obviously one of our important focuses," he explained. Both King and Larimore confirmed reports that the College is planning on launching a capital campaign at some point in the future in hopes of promoting a greater alumni donation rate.

"I'm sure that it will be discussed to some degree," Larimore said, although he added that he did not anticipate that it would be a focal point of the weekend.

This is King's last term as chairman of the board. His successor will be announced after his last meeting this June.
