To the Editor:
The new policy is surprisingly disappointing on the point of excluding current financial aid recipients and giving aid only to incoming students. (Imagine if the U.S. Congress were to pass a bill extending a tax credit to all new taxpayers only!) By not applying the change to encompass present, as well as future, beneficiaries, Dartmouth appears to be establishing two "classes" of recipients. It is disappointing to see a "progressive" school fail to be inclusive of all. Is this the message Dartmouth wants to give? If the policy were to apply equally, recruitment might suffer somewhat in the short run. But any losses may well be more than offset by three classes of future alumni and their parents, as well as the school's many other current alumni and friends. Take another look. Do what's just and fair.
