To the Editor:
It is kind of disheartening to know that people blame society for the individual's behavior. Does society make you take drugs? Does society make you hate/dislike another person? More importantly did society, i.e. the Greek System, make these students yell inappropriate comments? No!
We need to remember that human beings are hedonistic. Individual people in society make their own choices based on what they find pleasurable. This sociological perspective makes society seem as though it is its own entity; it is its own person. In fact, it is made up of many individuals of all colors and creeds with differing ideas and beliefs. Just because these young men may have been white capitalistic males, does not mean that all white capitalistic males are the same way. Believing this makes you just as responsible for the recent incident as the young men at Psi Upsilon fraternity.
If you honestly believe that an individual's behavior is a direct consequence of society, then you need a wake up call. Just because you can't accept responsibility for these problems doesn't mean that you can blame everything that goes wrong on society or the environment you live in. Don't punish the Greek system for the mistake of a few students. The challenge that lies ahead of you is to get all students to embrace the differences in each other. It will only help you and everyone in this great college community. Please, take the time to understand the differences in everyone now. It is a once in a lifetime chance; once you graduate you can't go back and fix it.
