Skiing with Half

To the Editor:

As we have read news of the terrible tragedy unfold in your publication, we have been remembering our friend Half. It was so many years ago. We were in our twenties then, all at Stanford, feeling quite invincible, and we had great fun together.

It was Half that first introduced us to cross-country skiing, which we still enjoy here in Colorado. We hiked in Yosemite and climbed Half Dome, where Heather and Half enjoyed a nap on top, while Wes made the tea.

We still say to each other, when doing a hard hike, "We cannot eat until we get to the summit," said with a German accent of course. Half was our best friend.

Why then did we let all the years pass without maintaining contact? Now it's too late!

Our sorrow is eased somewhat by the writings of friends, telling us what a happy life they enjoyed together as a family and with so many good friends. How we would love to have met Susanne and their girls.

Don't lose contact with your old friends, they are precious and irreplaceable.
