To the Editor:
I was shocked to read in The Dartmouth that Dana Meadows is dead. She was so full of life. In the fall term of 1983, as a visiting scholar, I team-taught a seminar with Dana Meadows in the old Policy Studies program. She was a gem of a teacher, as your story indicated. One of the core "texts" of that seminar was "Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values" by Robert M. Persig. For those of you who haven't tackled the book, it is not light reading. In fact, it turned out to set just the right tone for an upper level Policy Studies course. Dana walked the class through the intricacies of the book. The road to Quality can have many traps. I am thankful that I had the privilege of knowing her and working with her, and I am sorry that future Dartmouth students will not have the benefit of her wisdom.
