To the Editor:
I have no connection with Dartmouth (wish I did), but I've been following this tragic but unusual and fascinating case and your excellent coverage.
I just saw a news report that the police are stopping cars and asking folks if they saw anything. I'm something of a mystery buff, and in my experience this is a bad sign. It almost certainly means that the police have absolutely nothing so far and the crime was random (Super Bowl weekend, Ray Lewis copycat?) and will be extremely difficult to solve unless the killer strikes again nearby. The authorities should release all but the most specific details of the crime immediately (for example, if the victims put up a struggle the killer might have been injured on the face or hands, and someone might have noticed someone with injuries that weekend) and also call in the FBI to do a profile of the killer to narrow down the search, because if the crime was random, it will be very difficult to solve because there will be literally millions of suspects.
