Door Locking Unnecessary

To the Editor:

While I believe I understand the motivations behind the College's decision to put locks on the doors, I feel that it is both an unnecessary and ultimately futile exercise. First, the crime rate at Dartmouth is very low, and Dartmouth students as a whole feel safe enough to leave the doors to their own rooms unlocked. Second, crimes that are committed (including the recent bout of ladies' room voyeurism this decision seems to be in response to) are generally committed by students themselves. This new security system would continue to allow any student into any dorm on campus without hindrance at all.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this system would allow the College to keep tabs on a student's daily movement around campus, and the frequency with which students visited different buildings. Doing so would be yet another example of the administration's refusal to trust its own students.
