Another Friend Remembers

To the Editor:

There are so many tragedies today, but our reactions are so different when we really knew the victims. The Zantops were my neighbors and a huge piece of my childhood. When I read "Remembering Our Friends," I could remember so many visits to their home and dinners at their table. I remember most Susanne making us waffles with powdered sugar and hot chocolate after a snowy day. I remember being introduced to pesto for the first time at their dinner table. I remember the nicknames she had for my sister and me so she wouldn't mix us up. I remember Susanne in her batik skirts and Half in his cargo shorts and Birkenstocks. I remember Vermont Public Radio always on at their home and no TV. I remember caring, stable, intellectual parents who encouraged reading and piano. These memories are huge but only a small piece of the memories I have of the Zantops. As I hear and read all that people remember about the Zantops, I realize my memories are only one small example of the caring, knowledge and friendship the Zantops provided to the Hanover community. I am lost from this tragedy, but these memories I know will help me find my way back.
