To the Editor:
I am writing to apologize to the Dartmouth community for the actions of a few individuals of Psi Upsilon Fraternity on the night of Feb. 17, 2001. The actions of the members involved are inexcusable and unacceptable. No matter what the two brothers who were chanting meant to convey, their conduct was clearly offensive. Even though other brothers took action and promptly ended what was occurring, what took place never should have.
Before apologizing, I would like to clarify that this was the act of a few individuals and does not reflect the sentiment of the entire house. We understand that as a house we are held responsible for the actions of our members. However, I would like to state that Psi U in no way condones racist or misogynist behavior. By no means is the "Whah Hoo Wah" song a part of the lore of our house.
I would like the community to know that Psi U has already taken steps to internally adjudicate those members involved in this heinous incident. I would like the Dartmouth community to know that the house is not turning a blind eye to the actions of these members, and they are being dealt with appropriately.
The entire brotherhood of Psi U would like to apologize to the individual who was insulted, the Greek community, and the rest of the Dartmouth community for the outrageous actions of some of our members. We understand that we have damaged our relationship with the Dartmouth College community. Through both internal action and time, we hope to mend the rift we have created between the community and ourselves. Please accept our most genuine apologies.
