A Matter of Basic Safety

To the Editor:

In light of recent events in and around Dartmouth (the tragedy of the Zantop murders most obviously and incidents with the women's showers) it is clear that, although Dartmouth may feel safer than most places, we are not immune to realities beyond our campus. Personal safety is and always has been an issue that should concern all of us. This is why I want to speak up and say that I am glad that we are finally getting locks in women's showers.

It disturbs me that it is even an issue to be debated, as if locking showers will take away from the sense of safety and community at Dartmouth. If anything, it is showing a responsible response on the part of the College, albeit late in my opinion. If even a few women (myself included) have to think twice when doing something as simple as taking a shower, something is wrong and action needs to be taken. It is not a matter of "atmosphere" or "creating a panic" as I have heard commented --- it is about giving women the right to some protection from intrusion or assault, it is about basic safety. I hope it will be seen as such.
