A Delaware Response

To the Editor:

In response to Mr. De Los Santos' letter proclaiming his disbelief of "how thoughtless and insensitive some frat boys can be," I must point out that thoughtlessness and insensitivity is not exclusive to the Greek system. While I have endured my share of catcalls and other annoyances resonating from a fraternity house, I have heard the same comments walking on Main Street or even in the dorms. All of us are thoughtless and insensitive at one time or another; anyone who says he is not is, in addition to being thoughtless and insensitive, also a liar. I do not attend Dartmouth; instead I am proud to be a Fightin' Blue Hen. I am also not a member of my University's Greek system because I am too poor and the sororities here are just not my style. But some of my best friends have gone Greek, including my freshman-year roommate. And in all of them, I have seen a positive change. This year, as a resident assistant on the freshman side of campus, I am reliving the rushing and pledging with my residents.

Greek life is about brotherhood and sisterhood, not about being a meathead or a slut. Unfortunately, some forget that and succeed in perpetuating the stereotypical "frat boy" or "sorority slut" image. Those who choose to subscribe to such unfair labels are only being thoughtless and insensitive to those Greeks that have the true spirit of their community in their minds and hearts. I feel badly that Mr. De Los Santos knows so many creepy guys. He should come to Delaware and enjoy our at least 70 percent female campus. If he's as respectful, compassionate, just and understanding as he expects those around him to be, he'll have the ladies falling all over him and won't have to worry about being around any "thoughtless or insensitive frat boys."
