Assembly to install computers, buy fitness machines

In an effort to increase the number of blitz terminals available to students, the Student Assembly plans to install 32 computers around campus.Noting that the computers formerly located in the East Baker Library and Kiewit are no longer in use, Assembly President Jorge Miranda '01 took the initiative to obtain the computers from Computing Services.

The computers have been cleaned up and reprogrammed. While some will be installed in high traffic areas such as Thayer, Collis, Silsby and the Hopkins Center, most of the computers will be placed in residential clusters including the River, Choates and Gold Coast.

The Assembly is also working to improve the Kresge Fitness Center by allocating some of its funds to buy two new elliptical machines. This action comes in conjunction with a resolution passed by the Assembly about the fitness center, which noted that the gym facility was not adequate to serve students' needs at this time.

According to Miranda, the weight room has been a big issue for a long time and many students are disappointed with the current facilities. He pointed out that other Ivy League schools have better facilities, due to considerably more funds allocated to their gyms.

Miranda said that the Kresge Fitness Center resolution and improvements come from the Assembly's desire to make a statement on important issues as well as to produce tangible results for the student body.

The Assembly also passed a resolution last night to encourage and recognize outstanding student-faculty relations and commitment to teaching.

Awards of $75 gift certificates to the Dartmouth Bookstore will be given to four professors during the next two terms. $100 will also be rewarded to one department that shows a particular commitment to student faculty relations.
