Men's soccer drops two weekend contests

Although Dartmouth laid out the welcome mat for its opponents at the Kappa/Hypertherm Men's Soccer Classic last weekend, Stanford and Boston University did not return the favor. Dartmouth dropped both games, falling to BU 3-0 on Saturday, and to tournament winner Stanford 6-0 Sunday.

Goaltending was the difference against BU as Terrier keeper Michael Cardenas stopped 11 shots.

BU got on the board early with a goal from Andrew Dorman at 8:46 in the first half. Alan McNamara added to the Terrier lead with a tally at 21:51.

The final BU goal came in the 73rd minute on a penalty kick by Chris Bone.

Looking for a change of luck the next day against the Stanford Cardinal, the Big Green found no respite. With former Dartmouth head coach Bobby Clark at the helm, the 5-0 Cardinal scored early and often against the hosts, while the Big Green could not solve the Stanford defense and keeper Adam Zapala.

Lee Morrison drew first blood at 3:07 on a header from Aaron Biddle. Stanford added two more scores in the first half by Johanes Maliza and Scott Leber in less than a minute.

In the 64th minute Leber added his second score of the game on an assist from Derek Shanahan. Shanahan added another helper on Mike Murphy's goal at 74:30. The final Stanford tally came from Roger Levesque at 81:40.

Dartmouth entered the tournament 2-0 after posting a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart in its season opener and then a 3-1 win over Northeastern two days later.

Forward Matt Labarre '03 was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week after scoring three goals and an assist. Two of his goals were game winners.

The tournament losses dropped Dartmouth to 2-2 on the year.

Sweeper Ben Kennedy '00 and Labarre earned All-Tournament Honors with their strong play.
