Jail cell apology

To the Editor:

This letter is in regard to the fire that occurred at Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity in early December of last year. My name is Damien Williams, and I am the sole individual responsible for the fire. I am composing this letter from my cell at the Grafton County House of Corrections.

While I have spent time apologizing to my family, friends, the brothers of Chi Gam and the brothers of Phi Delta Alpha fraternity, I have neglected my responsibilities to the Dartmouth community as a whole.

I can't begin to describe how sorry I am for what I have done. I know that apologies are most often exercises in futility, and it's impossible to convince people otherwise. However, know that I am paying for my transgressions and will continue to pay for them for the rest of my life. Had anything whatsoever have happened to anyone in the house that night, I promise you would not be reading this letter from me. As it now stands, this almost didn't happen.

I know that I am in no position to expect forgiveness from anyone, but at the very least this public apology is a step in seeking forgiveness from myself.
