The next time you have difficulty loading onto DCIS Navigator from your computer, don't go running to Kiewit -- you won't find anyone there to help.
As a result of the Baker-Berry library project, Computing Sales and Services -- including the Help Desk and Computer Resource Center -- have temporarily moved to the lower-level of Gerry Hall.
All of the servers and other machinery, as well as the rest of the computing staff, are also scheduled to move out of Kiewit by the end of summer before the building is torn down during Fall term.
After the completion of the library project, computing offices will be split between Berry and Baker libraries -- with the more technical staff situated in the lower level of Berry and the computing administrative offices in Baker.
The Computing Help Desk will eventually be housed in Carson Hall -- an attached wing to Berry library that will be built in Kiewit's place and is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 2001. The history department will also move to Carson.
"I think we're happy with the move," Bill Brawley, spokesman for Computing Services, said.
Although satisfied with the overall transfer, Larry Levine, Director of Computing, said the various moves over the next couple of years may be "difficult and trying." He added that as a result of the move, Computing Services will receive more physical space.
"We're certainly getting more public service space and there's a slight increase in office space" as well, Levine said.
Levine said with the library and computing in one location, his department will be able to provide better, more integrated information services to users.
According to Levine, Computing Services will be moving the physical computers out of Kiewit during the summer as well. He said the servers may be down for a few minutes in the middle of the night when the actual transfer is taking place but that the move will have little impact on College users.
