Class of 1935 returns to campus

Members of the Class of 1935 will celebrate their 75th Reunion this weekend, with various events planned to bring the Class together to Hanover once again.

A bus tour of the Dartmouth/Hanover area, as well as speeches about Dartmouth's various professional schools took place during the day Friday, while the evening was filled with a class reception and dinner at the Hanover Inn.

Later that night President and Mrs. James Wright hosted alumni at their home, and the Glee Club and Chamber Singers performed for them at the Hopkins Center.

Saturday morning the class held a memorial service for its deceased members, followed by a luncheon for all the reunioning classes, with speakers President Wright and Alexander Medlicott '50. A tour was planned for the afternoon of the Hood Museum and Rauner Special Collections library.

Saturday concluded with another class reception and dinner, and members will depart today after Commencement exercises and a Farewell Picnic Luncheon at the DOC House.

Members of the Class of 1935 attended Dartmouth at a very trying time, according to Senior Associate Director of Alumni relations David Orr. Approximately 25 percent of the student body withdrew because they could no longer afford to attend, due to the Great Depression. Though some were able return and complete their studies, many never did.

During their senior year, the Winter Carnival celebrated its 25th anniversary, with a Norse theme to celebrate "the spirit of the adventure of the sturdy Norse man." A cross-country ski race and Occum Pond skating races, as well as a "Pirates of Penzance" performance were planned.

Though they all attended the College during a difficult time period, this weekend many will return and reminisce about the many positive memories they shared.
