Not Promoting Diversity

To the Editor:

I couldn't help but notice an interesting phrase quoted in the recent article "Controversy Surrounds Voces Guest Speaker." The Dartmouth quoted a BlitzMail message from Voces Clamantium that said "But we believe that Mrs. Schneider represents one perspective that is held by many people at Dartmouth but almost never voiced in a public forum. Thus, we believe her story is worth hearing and will promote diversity of opinion on the Dartmouth campus."

That is an interesting argument. Of course, I'm sure there are people at Dartmouth that hold racist views but rarely voice them in a public forum. I'm also sure there are people at Dartmouth who hold anti-Semitic views but rarely voice them in a public forum. I'm sure there are all manner of ignorant, divisive views that are rarely aired in a public forum. I don't think that providing a forum for those views would in any way "promote diversity of opinion on the Dartmouth campus," and I don't think that providing a forum for Mrs. Schneider will in any way "promote diversity of opinion on the Dartmouth Campus."
