Although incidents at recent Green Key Weekends have been kept to a minimum, Safety and Security and the Hanover Police are taking the usual precautions to make sure everything goes smoothly during this weekend's festivities.
"We have big weekends throughout the year, and we treat [Green Key Weekend] as any other," Safety and Security Sergeant Rebel Roberts said.
Roberts said the department prepares for the weekend in several ways, including an early building lockup of specific buildings and parts of buildings on campus.
Safety and Security officers will patrol the campus as usual, following a routine in which most of the 10 full time night guards are on duty after dark, working from early evening until early morning the next day.
Safety and Security also plans to have three vans driving around campus, ready to respond to emergencies. One van is equipped to transport someone who uses a wheelchair.
The night security staff works 10-hour shifts, during which officers will cover an average of 12 to 14 miles on foot and check approximately 150 buildings on campus.
Standard procedure is to cover every floor in the building, starting from the lowest floor and working up.
Similarly, Hanover Police Department plans to increase the number of officers during the evening and night, which is when the great majority of incidents occur, according to Hanover Police Chief Nick Giaccone.
According to Officer Bobby Young, who is in charge of coordinating supervision of registered CFS events, Safety and Security will check up on tier three open parties twice a night and tier two parties at least once.
Tier three parties are defined as having five kegs of beer and a large number of party-goers not from that house, while a tier two party has two kegs and is comprised mostly of house members.
Young said that he will be frequenting Alpha Delta fraternity's Lawn Party, as it is a registered CFS event, but said he didn't think that Safety and Security would be present at events like Zeta Psi fraternity's band event, which will instead be covered by Hanover Police.
As for intoxicated individuals outside, "If they're on College property, we are going to uphold College policy," Young said.
Not surprisingly, the College Alcohol Policy will be enforced as usual during the weekend.
The policy prohibits public intoxication and the possession of open containers of alcohol on most parts of campus, including streets, the Green and areas near academic buildings.
The possession, consumption, or distribution of alcohol to minors or obviously intoxicated individuals is also a violation of College policy.
Because of the increased level of activity during the weekend, Roberts urges students to remain on the lookout for anything suspicious and lock the doors to their rooms.
"It helps to have students keep their eyes and ears open, especially when we are drawn to certain areas of activity," Roberts said.
The regular Safety and Security staff is also augmented by several students who are participating in an escort program run by the department.
Safety and Security will have a dispatcher ready to take calls 24 hours a day.
