Irrational Dialogue

To the Editor:

I would like to congratulate Voces Clamantium's courage in bringing such a controversial speaker and in dealing with yesterday's crowd. I'm very embarrassed by the behavior of that audience. It is very clear that a lot of them didn't come with an open mind, but rather with some list of charges to try her as if some in mob-court. I'm especially outraged by the non-students I saw yelling and being disruptive since none of their money was being spent on the facilities or on speaker herself, but I am also distressed by the rudeness demonstrated by some of the students in the audience. I lost a great deal of respect for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community of this college. Rather than rationally and calmly asking questions of the speaker and perhaps finding points of disagreement, they yelled insults and ruined the discussion for everyone. At the point the talk was ended it seemed the crowd was going to lynch her. No matter how passionate one is on either side of this issue, this dialogue could have continued in a rational manner. Instead it turned into an unruly mob unworthy of this college.
