Greek Week events try to bridge gap

Dartmouth's fraternities, sororities, and coeducational houses will be coming together and hosting events for the entire campus next week to mark the College's annual Greek Week celebration.

According to President of the Coed Fraternity and Sorority Council Eric Etu '01 in a BlitzMail Bulletin yesterday, Greek Week events are held in order for "non-Greeks to get to know more about the Dartmouth Greek System and for the Greeks to show their unity, pride and spirit."

President of the Panhellenic Council Alex Kremer '01 viewed the purpose similarly, citing it as an important chance for both affiliated and non-affiliated students to socialize.

"It's just an opportunity for the campus to come together and have a good time," she said. "It's our chance to give something back to the community."

Kremer also pointed out that many Greek houses use the week as an opportunity to hold pre-rush recruiting events for freshmen.

Activities are scheduled to take place in Greek houses throughout the week and will be open to all students.

Theta Delta Chi fraternity will kick off the festivities by hosting an all-Greek basketball tournament Sunday evening, with proceeds being donated to Operation Smile.

On Monday, all Greeks are encouraged to support their individual houses by wearing their letters. A free breakfast in Collis is being hosted by Delta Delta Delta sorority as well as Chi Heorot, Sigma Nu, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Psi Upsilon fraternities. Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity will host an afternoon finger-painting and pizza extravaganza.

On Tuesday afternoon at Sigma Delta sorority, the Panhell will host the first of a two-part lecture series concerning the future of race and gender relations at the College, entitled "Where Do We Go from Here?" The coeducational fraternities will also offer volleyball, music and food at their "Meet the Co-eds" barbecue on the lawn of Phi Tau fraternity later that afternoon.

Zeta Psi, Bones Gate and Sigma Nu fraternities will join forces with Alpha Xi Delta and Kappa Kappa Gamma sororities on Tuesday night to put on the "Backyard Boogie and Barbecue," at which the band Riverbed will be performing.

On Wednesday, students can go to Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity to submerge their friends in a dunk tank.

All proceeds of the event will go to the children's hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

That afternoon, Psi U will hold its own Greek Week barbecue along with Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity and Tri Delt.

Dartmouth's sororities will show their support for the arts Wednesday evening by inviting the Aires, Fusion, and Sheba to perform at KDE, Sigma Delt and Alpha Xi, respectively.

Gamma Delta fraternity will hold an afternoon lawn party and barbecue on Thursday afternoon featuring the musical selections of DJ Liquid. On the other side of Webster Avenue, Zete will be offering a Moon Bounce on their lawn at the same time, and later that evening, the Cords will perform at SAE.

On Friday afternoon Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority will host an IFC carwash with the proceeds going to David's House.

Students can quench their thirst for competition later that afternoon by participating in Tri Kap's dance, MC and slam dunk contests. SAE will host a faculty barbecue with the help of KDE later that evening.

Alpha Xi will then host a performance by JumpStart, followed by a "Dueling DJs" dance party, featuring the musical talent of two of Dartmouth's own disk jockeys.

Throughout the week, students are encouraged to drop off old but wearable clothing at SAE so that it may be donated to the Listen Center.
