An Open Letter

To the Editor:

Delta Delta Delta Fraternity was founded in 1888 in Boston, Massachusetts. Its Purpose is:

"To establish a perpetual bond of friendship among its members, to develop a stronger and more womanly character, to broaden the moral and intellectual life, and to assist its members in every possible way.

It Shall Also Be The Purpose of Delta Delta Delta to promote and develop mutually beneficial relationships between the Fraternity and the colleges and universities where the Fraternity has established chapters, to develop qualities of unselfish leadership among its members, and to encourage them to assume, with integrity and devotion to moral and democratic principles, the highest responsibilities of college women."

In order to uphold the purpose of our organization, Delta Delta Delta has established a number of programming goals, including meeting "the needs of collegiate women in today's world" and providing support for both the entire chapter and each of its individual members. In addition, our chapter has established such goals as providing an open and non-threatening atmosphere for all sisters and campus women, emphasizing mutual respect and leadership. This year we have worked especially hard to achieve the goals of our organization and to represent them to the Dartmouth Community.

As part of the Dartmouth Community, we have been afforded the opportunity to participate in the Coed, Fraternity, and Sorority Council (CFSC), the "body responsible for communicating the collective wishes, concerns, recommendations, grievances and opinions" of its members. Unfortunately, at this time, our purposes and goals are not in accordance with those of the CFSC. We have found this to be evident primarily in these three ways:

  1. Most of the issues which come before the CFSC are inapplicable to TriDelta.

  2. Many activities tolerated, and hence condoned, by the CFSC are in opposition to TriDelta's national and chapter goals.

  3. CFSC's programming and activites are ineffective in relation to our goals and purposes.

For these reasons we have decided to formally separate from the CFSC. Although we have decided to leave the CFSC we are still Delta Delta Delta Fraternity, a Greek Organization, governed by the PanHellenic Council and subject to the rules and regulations set by the Office of Residential Life for Greek Organizations. Should the CFSC develop into an organization which will better meet our needs and represent our goals, then we will gladly reconsider our membership status. It is our sincere hope that our departure will spur CFSC to make a committment to meeting the goals of its members and those of the Dartmouth Community.
