The Big Green women's lacrosse team continued their winning ways this season with a hard-fought 10-6 victory over UMass-Amherst yesterday. Jacque Weitzel '00 continued on her offensive tear with three goals, and co-captain Kate Graw '00 joined her in the effort with three tallies as well.
Unlike their game against Brown last weekend, the Minutemen made ninth-ranked Dartmouth sweat throughout much of the game. The Big Green held a precipitous 5-4 lead at the half.
Early in the second half Weitzel found rope for the second time of the game on a free position shot, which made the score 6-4. This was as close as UMass would get.
Weitzel added an assist to her three goals on the game, bringing her season total up to 33 points (28 g, 5 a), which leads the Ivy League in scoring. Weitzel places second on the Dartmouth career goals list, needing only 33 more to tie Lauren Holleran '95 for the all-time lead.
Senior co-captain Melissa Frazier had a pair of goals for the winning cause, while defenseman Amy Zimmer '01 contributed two assists.
In net for the Big Green was Ellie Leahy '01, who played the entire game, making 11 saves. Leahy leads the Ivy League in goaltending with a 5.64 goals against average and a .607 save percentage. Those statistics improve even more in Ivy League games, where they jump to 3.33 and .750 respectively.
Their fourth straight win puts Dartmouth at 5-1 on the year, while UMass fell to 2-5 overall.
The Big Green, led by its potent offense and stingy defense, has outscored their opponents by an 83-38 margin thus far this season.
Dartmouth will travel to Ithaca on Saturday for their third consecutive road game, against No. 17 Cornell. The Big Red is 5-2 on the season (1-1 Ivy League), and is coming off two tough weekend losses to No. 13 Vanderbilt and No. 2 Princeton. Game time is 1 p.m.
