Vice Presidential Student Assembly Candidates

Chance Hill '01

Age: 21

Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.

Major: Government

Minor: Spanish

Chance Hill '01 said he would like to work with Dean of the College James Larimore and the administration to include effectively all student input in the Initiative decisions that will be made next year.

Pointing out that the administration will be deciding important details next year in implementing the Trustees' Initiative guidelines, Hill stressed the need for student input in decisions that will be "changing our lives."

As vice president, Hill would also like to "moderately reform" the Assembly to attract more students and actively recruit different types of students. "Some critical examination of the current [setup] is in order," he said.

Hill said he also plans "to develop an institutional voice for student government so students can gain the influence they deserve."

Recognizing that moderately reforming the Assembly and developing an institutional voice cannot happen overnight, Hill said, if elected, he plans to take the initial steps next year to begin the process.

He is Green Key president, the Assembly student services chair and belongs to Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Jacob Ostderhout '02

Age: 20

Hometown: Washington, D.C.

Major: English modified with Creative Writing

The Jack-O-Lantern's vice-presidential candidate, Jacob Osterhout '02 hopes to dissemble the College's coeducational system and replace it with a single-sex all-female student body.

Referring to the huge controversy on campus over single-sex and coed houses, Osterhout said by becoming single-sex, Dartmouth can solve its main problem.

Osterhout plans to replace the "pseudo-democratic" governing body at Dartmouth with a theocracy.

"I feel like the SA is the lowest layer in the food chain at Dartmouth," he said. "By making it a theocracy, we can put it above [College President James] Wright."

Osterhout also said he wants all soda and candy machines in residence halls to have swiping mechanisms that accept student identification cards.

Apart from his involvement with the Jack-O-Lantern, Osterhout plays on the rugby team and is involved with Dream -- a community service organization on campus. He is a member of the Alpha Delta fraternity and an eco representative for his South Fayerweather residence hall.

Molly Stutzman '02

Age: 20

Hometown: Wilmette, Ill.

Major: History

Minor: Education

Molly Stutzman '02 said she hopes to strengthen the College community by making the Student Assembly a more inclusive and representative body.

"The SA does not draw upon the strengths of all students -- by becoming more representative of the student body I want to make it as strong as it can be."

Stutzman pointed out that many people never get involved in the Assembly because they feel alienated or they feel they are not represented.

In order to make the Assembly more representative, Stutzman wants to redefine the roles of the organizational and class members to ensure that they have more contact with students they are supposed to be representing.

Asserting that every student has valuable things to say about his or her experiences and expectations from Dartmouth, Stutzman said everyone who gets involved in the Assembly must feel represented -- and as vice president she hopes to work towards this end.

Stutzman is currently the Assembly's chair of the student life committee. She is a sister in Alpha Xi Delta sorority and has also been highly involved in the 2002 Class Council, having served on the executive committee for two years. She is also involved with some Rockefeller Center groups on campus and will serve as an Undergraduate Advisor next year.
