During their upcoming visit to Hanover from April 13-15, the Board of Trustees will spend a considerable amount of time discussing the Student Life Initiative.
Sometime after their deliberations, the Trustees are expected to issue a report with the direction of where the Board and the College see the implementation of the Initiative heading.
"Our goal is from a directional stand point to make it clear where we are heading" with the Initiative, William H. King '63, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said.
However, King said at this point he does not know what precise form or direction the report will take.
He said that it is possible, although unlikely, that the report will be released right after their meeting. However, at the latest, he hopes they are able to meet their goal of finishing it by the end of spring term.
"We may end up making some decisions" during the weekend, King said. However, "it takes time putting them in writing."
The Board of Trustees is also expected to discuss financial issues pertaining to the Student Life Initiative process at their upcoming meeting. King informed The Dartmouth that the Trustee Finance Committee has already been looking into a number of options to fund changes to Dartmouth's social and residential life.
The kind of changes and the timing of their implementation will depend upon the availability of financial resources, King said.
King told The Dartmouth that the Board has received all the reports responding to the steering committee recommendations -- plus additional statements from alumni, students and the faculty. King said he is very pleased with the level of response, adding that the students were "reasonably active" in sharing their input through electronic means.
"The response and participation has really been overwhelming," King said. "I say that in the most positive sense."
