The Big Green sailing team took advantage of the beautiful weather this weekend to tinker with their lineup and learned that they do have some depth. The women's team took third at the 21st annual Joe Duplin Trophy on Upper Mystic Lake in Medford, MA, and the co-ed team won fifth place at the Boston Dinghy Cup.
Dartmouth women Thalia Pascalides '03 and Liza Cowen '00 finished sixth in the A-division, while All-American Jen Morgan '02 and Esther Freeman '01 finished second. This was good enough for third place, beating top-ranked Harvard and second-ranked St. Mary's.
Tufts was the overall winner, followed by Boston University.
The Women's New England Championships will take place April 22 and 23, co-hosted by MIT and Harvard.
The co-ed squad expanded to race in four divisions rather than the usual two at the Boston Dinghy Cup. In the A-division, All-Americans Dan Herlihy '00 and Katie Lyndon '01 shared time with Patrick Hogan '01 and captain Erin Myers '00, placing sixth out of 16 teams.
The rest of the team included captain Marcus Coe '00 and Carly Prior '01 in the B-division, two-time All-American Erin Maxwell '01 and Leslie Sandberg '01 in the C-division, and Kevin Horrigan '01 and Cindy Keppel '02 in the D-division.
The team placed fifth out of 16 teams, and outpaced top-ranked St. Mary's of Maryland. Finishing ahead of Dartmouth were Harvard in first, followed by College of Charleston, MIT, and Tufts.
Coach Brian Doyle explained his lineup moves citing the experience it offered the younger sailors.
"By stepping every skipper up a division we are able to better prepare our team for upcoming championships competition and future seasons," said Doyle.
The Co-ed Dinghy Championship will be held at Dartmouth on May 6-7. The top four teams will move on to the National Competition at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on June 5-7.
