JC tells Psi Upsilon: keg jump case closed

The Judiciary Committee of the Coed Fraternity Sorority Council denied yesterday Psi Upsilon fraternity's appeal of the probation placed on the house last week.

The appeal was filed on the basis of new information provided by student and alumni witnesses gathered by Psi U and clemency for the house's good faith.

The probation was a result of alleged violations of College rules during Psi U's keg jump held over Winter Carnival last term.

Daniel Granik '01, acting chairman of the JC, declined to comment, but made reference to a letter to The Dartmouth written by the committee for explanation.

Dan Mahoney '01, president of Psi U, also declined to comment on the matter.

In its letter, the JC said the decision to deny the appeal was due to Psi U's "lack of understanding of wrongdoing; furthermore the content of their letter did nothing to waver our belief that we made a fully informed decision."

The statement listed five points that described in detail the ways in which Psi U failed to honor agreements made with the College, including failure to implement limitations on outdoor consumption of alcohol, failure to remove glass off the ice, improper supervision of roadblocks, inadequate crowd control and the existence of underage drinking.

The letter criticized Psi U for poor organization, which it claimed resulted in a lack of communication between house members, a breakdown of authority and the neglect of many responsibilities and duties.

"The Judiciary Committee believes that the poor organization and coordination of the keg jump event is indicative of a greater problem within Psi Upsilon," the JC's letter said.

However, in its opening paragraph, the committee expressed support for the continuance of the keg jump in future years so long as it is conducted in a more orderly manner.

Psi U, which conducted its annual keg jump during Winter Carnival on Feb. 12, was placed on a six week probation for alleged violations of the College's Community Standards of Conduct and the Student Alcohol policy last week. The violations include serving alcohol to underage and intoxicated persons and creating an unsafe environment for College members.

The event was the fraternity's 19th annual keg jump.
