Initiative announcement to come today

The Student Life Initiative process enters its next phase today.

The Board of Trustees' much-awaited report -- which contains initial steps to begin implementing the Student Life Initiative -- will be revealed for the first time to the Dartmouth community today.

At an 8 a.m. breakfast this morning attended by a number of campus leaders, College President James Wright and Chairman of the Board of Trustees William H. King, Jr. '63 are expected to unveil the Trustees' decision. Other senior College administrators including Provost Susan Prager are also expected to be present at the meeting.

The Trustee report will be posted on a website, and all students will be receiving a BlitzMail message informing them of the availability of the report. Students will also receive a copy of the report in their Hinman boxes today.

Dean of the College James Larimore is scheduled to meet various student leaders tonight to discuss the report.

According to Larimore the report is around three to five pages long -- a "much, more brief document" compared to the steering committee report last term.

"The Board's statement focuses more on strategic issues and a policy direction," Larimore explained. They are like broad guiding principles, he added.

According to Larimore, the College administration will be charged with implementing the report after the release of the Trustees' decision. However, at this stage, Larimore declined to comment on how quickly the changes announced by the Trustees are likely to be enacted.

Larimore did say he was very anxious to start making positive changes to Dartmouth's social and residential life.

Speaking to The Dartmouth last night, Student Assembly President Dean Krishna '01 appeared confident that the Trustee decision will take student opinion into account.

"The Board did read everything [students] wrote. I assume any decision they make will incorporate student opinion," Krishna said. "I am confident that they are not going to announce the end of the Greek system."

Talking to The Dartmouth earlier this week, King said the Trustee report contains "initial action to begin implementing the SLI."

According to King, the Initiative implementation process is an evolving one that will continue even after today's announcement. He said the Trustees will be dealing with separate issues related to the Initiative as time goes on.

King could not be reached for comment last night.
