CFSC to release response on Feb. 24

The Coed Fraternity Sorority Council plans to publicly release its response to the steering committee recommendations at a dinner on Feb. 24 held at Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

Having invited the Trustees, senior College administrators and campus leaders to attend the event, the CFSC is hoping the entire Dartmouth community will read the report -- which will be posted on the Internet -- and discuss it.

"Despite the fact that it is closed, we want it to be as public an event as possible," CFSC President Eric Etu '01 said.

Describing the CFSC report as "comprehensive," Etu said it deals with a number of issues including diversity, social space and the Principle of Community, as well as the steering committee's recommendation calling for "substantial changes" to the Greek system.

"The Greek part is just another section and by no means a majority of the report," Etu said.

According to Etu, the report sets some goals that the CFSC would like the College and the Greek system to attain, such as improving diversity and learning at the College and making students feel more at home.

"A portion of our report is a vision of where we would like to see Dartmouth go and how we would like to see the Greek system fit in," he said.

According to Etu, the CFSC decided on the Feb. 24 deadline before the Task Force decided on its Feb. 25 deadline for submissions from the student body. He said the CFSC initially hoped it would be able to amend the report based on student response before the Task Force deadline.

However, Etu said that with the deadlines so close to one another, the CFSC will not be able to change the report.

Other Greek organizations are also planning on submitting individual reports to the Student Response Task Force.

Inter-Fraternity Council President Mike Johnson '01 said the IFC plans to submit a response to the steering committee recommendations which will incorporate the view of the whole fraternity system.

Johnson said fraternity issues which do not share universal appeal like removing taps from Greek houses will probably not be included in the report, while issues like moving rush to Winter term, which is a common cause of concern, will be a part of the IFC response.

"We are more or less dealing with the common ground fraternities share," he said.

Panhellic Council President Alex Kremer '01 said her organization will be also submitting a separate report to the Task Force on Feb. 23.

Asserting that the Panhell report will not deal with all the issues of the steering committee report, Kremer said, "It really focuses on issues dealing with sororities and how we as a sorority system can fit in the Dartmouth College structure."

Some individual Greek houses are also planning on submitting responses to the Task Force.
