Looking Ahead at 2000

The 2001 Directorate would like to welcome you to

the 201st year of The Dartmouth's publication. With the upcoming Initiative announcement and the New Hampshire Presidential primary, this year may be one of the most exciting in the newspaper's long history.

At present, the mood of the campus is one of suspense and anticipation, as the College community braces for the upcoming release of the steering committee recommendations and the potential for major social and residential life changes.

Similarly, as the Presidential primary approaches, the mood of the nation is also rife with tension and excitement. Who will New Hampshire choose as its Presidential candidates? The final results of such close races will surely influence primaries throughout the nation and perhaps the future of America.

In order to better serve the Dartmouth community's desire for information concerning these events, The Dartmouth will periodically publish special issues in addition to our standard in-depth coverage. Further information will also be available on our website, thedartmouth.com.

The website is part of an effort to expand interaction between The Dartmouth and our readers -- whether they are in Hanover or across the globe. Thedartmouth.com enables readers to peruse back issues, voice concerns regarding campus controversies and even take part in online polls.

In addition, readers may notice minor stylistic, graphical and format changes implemented in order to improve the aesthetic design of the paper. Enhanced by these changes, The Dartmouth will continue to provide the best coverage of on and off-campus news events as well as sports, arts and entertainment.

The new editors are firmly committed to upholding the purpose of The Dartmouth -- to cover the issues and events that matter to the community.
