College to announce Montgomery Fellows

Students can expect to learn the identity of this term's Montgomery Fellows sometime next week. According to Assistant Provost Barbara Gerstner these new fellows have already been chosen.

The announcement will be made as soon as the dates of their visits are finalized. According to Gerstner, who is Executive Director of the Montgomery Endowment, it has been extremely difficult to find dates that are convenient for both the College and the fellows.

While Gerstner declined to give out any details, she said she is very excited about the program and anticipates an enthusiastic student reaction.

Montgomery Fellows have typically been announced at the beginning of the term, or towards the end of the preceding term.

Previous fellows have included such distinguished speakers as August Wilson, Toni Morrison, and Richard Shechner. Last winter, the endowment brought a series of presidential biographers to campus.

The Montgomery Endowment was established in 1977 by Kenneth F. Montgomery '25 and his wife to bring outstanding figures from academic and non-academic fields to interact with the Dartmouth students.

Fellows visit for periods ranging between a few days and a few months, depending on how long the individual can stay, the resources of the endowment, and whether or not they are able to teach courses.

During this time, the fellows reside at the Montgomery House on Rope Ferry Road near Dick's house.
