Who Needs Greeks?

With the Steering Committee actually making decisions, a lot of students are getting nervous again. What will become of the Greek system in a few years? Well I say, "Who needs it?"

I mean let's start with the sororities. I was a rushee this year. I was even one of those famous ones that were turned away. So I feel qualified in saying that the sorority system needs to end. After all, what can a female Dartmouth student really gain from having a place where they are always accepted, where they can go for support at any time?

I mean, I saw with my own eyes that sisters have friends in all of the sororities. What possible good could come of that? The houses should be fighting because women are all catty and vengeful. I noticed sisters helping and supporting each other, whereas everybody knows that women should be forced to rely on their boyfriend/husband for support.

Sororities are obviously having a negative impact on the women of Dartmouth. I asked almost every girl I talked to what the best thing about being in their Greek house was, and the majority actually said that they had met and become friends with people they never would have talked to otherwise. What kind of organization are these? They are supposed to be dens of sin and exclusivity. Dartmouth's sororities are a sad excuse for Greek houses. They should be banished for trying to tarnish the reputation of sororities everywhere.

What about the fraternities, you say? I mean, they're all really awful right? Everyone knows that the frats at Dartmouth are immoral, immature, and embarrassing. As an entering freshman at this school, I avoided fraternities like the plague. Imagine my horror as I slowly began to go to these places.

From the first time I stepped into a frat at Dartmouth (for a non-a cappella event, anyway), I was witness to things like brothers stopping each other from drinking too much. What is that about? These guys are supposed to pass out in a drunken stupor five nights out of seven! Who do they think they are looking out for each other!? And then, horror of horrors, I beheld brothers stopping women from drinking too much! Any kind of real man would have pumped as much alcohol into those women as possible and then taken advantage of them.

These fraternities are a joke! I saw more immoral behavior at my high school graduation party! I AM embarrassed by them. Why, they aren't what they're supposed to be at all! The worst of it is, they even provide a support system for their members. Everyone knows that all men are strong and don't need support from anybody.

These so-called frats are just teaching misled Dartmouth men about things like tolerance, self-confidence, and friendship. There should be no tolerance in a Greek system! Confidence? Members should make everyone so insecure that they will do whatever it takes to be part of the group. Above all, they shouldn't have 'friends,' they should have only allies in the war against everything good and holy.

I have seen the Greek system at other schools. One of my closest friends attends a school in which every fraternity is allowed one female member. That member is called the Little Sister, and her main function is to be seen constantly hanging about the house wearing cute outfits and smiling.

I watched as fraternity guys near my home rolled on the floor laughing at one brother's story of how he ran off the road when driving drunk. "Man, so-and-so is always driving trashed," they said between peals of laughter.

I know of sororities in which the members are only allowed to date members of a particular fraternity. Those fraternity boys can date whomever they please, of course, in order to keep them women in their place.

I watched older brothers of a fraternity chase my friend, who was a pledge at the time, down the street with a paddle. They caught him and dragged him, screaming, back into their house.

What could I do about this? Nothing. The administration turned a blind eye to all of these things.

But the administration at Dartmouth does no such thing. They see quite clearly the pathetic state of the Greek system here. That must be why they believe it needs to be stopped, or at least given some major renovations. Personally, I agree. I want to see an end to all of this acceptance, loyalty, and emotional support. It's ridiculous! If Dartmouth can't have dens of debauchery, then they should have nothing at all.
