Students plan for 2000 New Year's

With only three months remaining until the year 2000, students interviewed by The Dartmouth seem to be abandoning bold plans for their New Year's celebration, opting instead to simply hang out with their friends.

Kapil Jain '02 simply wants to get together with his friends from home.

"It will be very low key," he said.

This attitude is widespread at the College -- many students are avoiding any far-reaching, extravagant plans.

Miles Harrigan '03 thought of doing something crazy with all of his high school buddies but has since abandoned those plans, pointing out that "it would take too much planning."

There are a handful of students, however, who have slightly more extravagant plans.

Resembling a nationwide freshmen sweep, Ryan Higgins '03 is planning a week long caravan along the east coast, picking up friends on the way. Eventually, his party wagon will find its way to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras-like celebration.

"I don't want to be in somebody's basement. I want to be right in the middle of everything," Higgins said.

Unlike some students, who seemed somewhat indifferent about the impending new year, Higgins feelings are rather strong about the millennium.

"Oh, I completely care. It's something you'll tell your grand-kids about," he said.

Some Dartmouth students will spend the last days of 1999 participating in College activities.

Kelly Hsieh '01 will be teaching in the Marshall Islands along with other Dartmouth students. These lucky few will be the first to celebrate the new year, as they will be on the other side of the international dateline.

Many of Dartmouth's winter athletes will spend New Year's Eve at the College. Most seem happy with the prospect of spending their first few moments of 2000 with teammates.

Carrie Sekela '01, a member of the women's hockey team is looking forward to being on campus for New Year's.

Though her exact plans for December 31 are dependent upon the team's schedule, she said she's always excited to be with her hockey friends.

"We spend time bonding as a team," she said.

The ski team will be at one of the regional ski areas for a training trip over New Year's.

"I have to be here, so I'm not going to complain much," said Kristine Lund '03, a newcomer to the ski team.

Andrew Perlstein '00 will be broadcasting hockey over winter break. He is not too disappointed that he will be in the north woods of New Hampshire for the holiday.

"Hopefully, we'll find a party," he said.
