Safety and Security, police plan for weekend

This Green Key Weekend Safety and Security plans to continue enforcing College policy as it does on normal weekends, while being particularly cautious due to the nature of the weekend.

According to Safety and Security officer Mark Lancaster, who has been at Dartmouth for 15 years, there is usually an increase in alcohol violations and other types of offenses over Green Key, but he said the increase is not extreme.

"When I first came here, they were a lot crazier," he said.

Lancaster attributes the decrease in violations to an increase in alcohol awareness and a change in the nature of the students attending the College.

But he said more problems than usual are to be expected, because Green Key is one of the big weekends, and more non-students than usual will be on campus.

Lancaster said Safety and Security officers will be on bike patrol, cruiser patrol and foot patrol until about 4 a.m. during the weekend.

He said the officers will keep patrolling later than usual if they are needed.

"We're going to spread people around more this weekend," he said.

Chief of the Hanover Police Department, Nick Giaconne said Green Key is pretty low key typically.

But he said, "We have some extra overtime patrols on schedule."

The College alcohol policy will be in effect this weekend as it is every other weekend throughout the year.

As usual, underage drinking is against the student alcohol policy. Public intoxication is forbidden, as is providing alcohol to obviously intoxicated people, and students may not have open containers of alcoholic beverages in public places.

Also, in accordance with the alcohol policy, abusive behavior resulting from alcohol consumption will not be excused.

The monitoring system that Safety and Security employs will be the same as always, Lancaster said.

He said Safety and Security will visit each registered CFS event twice during the night.

Lancaster warned that students should be especially cautious this weekend, and should be sure to lock their doors and watch out for suspicious people.

"If any incident occurs, report it immediately," Lancaster said.

He said it is important that investigations begin immediately after events occur rather than hours later.

He also suggested that students should watch out for each other this weekend more than usual.
