Committee holds first meeting

The Board of Trustee Steering Committee, which will help shape the future of social and residential life at the College, met for the first time Friday, discussing its plans for future meetings as well as its timeline, which should see the group making its recommendation to the Board by the end of Fall term.

"It was basically an organizational meeting," Trustee Peter Fahey '68 said in an interview with The Dartmouth. "We also handed out packages of background materials that would be worthwhile for the members to be aware of."

Fahey said the packets contained information that included information about "situations of a related nature at other campuses" along with some information about "every other Ivy League school."

Fahey did not comment on what other schools were included in the packets.

Trustee Susan Dentzer '77 said the committee members spent a large part of the meeting talking about the group's purpose and goals.

The group attended President of the College James Wright's speech to the Alumni Council Friday night and heard reports from various alumni breakout sessions Saturday morning.

The committee's second meeting where they will begin discussion of the initiative will be a retreat over the weekend of June 19-20.

Fahey said they decided to delay the second meeting in order to avoid interfering with finals and Commencement.

The committee also will wait for the feedback from the Social and Residential Life Task Force as well as the written version of the report by the College Relations Group.

"We've already been given a summary version of what is likely to be in their report," Trustee Susan Dentzer '77 said, "we eagerly await the written version."

The Steering Committee will meet two or three times monthly in closed meetings, though Fahey said they will "meet with other groups that are concerned with the initiative."

Dentzer said the groups will include both those "that have already given us input" as well as "other groups in the Dartmouth community including alumni, faculty, administration and the student body."

She said the committee will also invite groups that have not previously given input.

The committee plans to open their meetings to the campus during Fall Term.

"In the fall after we've started to identify alternatives we will be conducting town meeting type sessions," Fahey said. "Our ultimate objective is to make our recommendation to the Board of Trustees by the end of next fall."
