Dear Editor:
As advisor to the Navigators Christian Fellowship, I also was personally targeted by the unknown "Chick Tract" sender [godlovesdartmuth@hotmail.com]. The booklet I received accused Christians who are not evangelical enough (like me, I guess) of betraying the faith.
As one who cares deeply about the expression of the gospel of Jesus Christ in contemporary culture, and now as one who is being apparently impugned in that endeavor, I absolutely decry the usage of such literature. Methods such as this tarnish in the worst possible way the message of grace I hold so dearly.
Furthermore, I specifically want to express my sympathy to those members of the Jewish and homosexual community who received this mailing. Historically, you have suffered incomprehensible pain at the hands of many "evangelicals." I grieve with you and can only hope that somehow bridges of forgiveness can help us get beyond this ugly incident to real reconciliation and friendship.
Lastly, in consulting with the advisor of the student group, Campus Crusade for Christ, I am convinced that the mailing is completely disassociated with either of our campus ministries. In fact, someone fraudulently used our joint Hinman Box (the return address indicated only "Crusade for Christ" with our box number) to mail these booklets. The Navigators and CCC have collaborated on many things over my nine years at Dartmouth, and I am saddened that the reputation of students within either of our ministries comes under question as a result of this virulent act.
