Sterotyping of Greeks is Hurtful and Insulting

To the Editor:

I would like to take a moment to respond to the column by Leyla Kamalick in the Feb. 19 issue of The D.

I am an alumnus of Dartmouth, and routinely glance through the D to gauge what's happening on campus. Upon reading your editorial, I wondered on what basis you make the assumption that all that is done in a fraternity or sorority is drinking until everyone vomits. That gross generalization is not far from that of saying that all Texans have cattle in their front yards (I'm from Texas, and find humor in that one). I was in a fraternity at Dartmouth, and learned more from the fellowship I gained there than I did anywhere else outside of the classroom.

Furthermore, you say that this decision is guaranteed to mean "less wild parties, less alcohol." Right. Just like it has at Middlebury. Visit there sometime. It hasn't. I'm sorry to inform you that students at colleges without Greek systems aren't any more enlightened than those at schools with. Doing stupid things is a product of youth and immaturity. I personally am in favor of battling immaturity with education, not limitation. But I guess what I think isn't important, as the administration appears to favor mandate over open discussion.

Finally, I find it offensive that you repeatedly refer to "me." (this was addressed "to Greeks and their Supporters") stating that you've seen "me" throw up for an hour straight. And you've seen "me" hurt myself and hurt others. And that you've seen "me" do plenty of other stupid things. I recognize that this is simply your style, but that style epitomizes your tactic of generalization in categorizing people who you've never met in such a way that is hateful and insulting.
