To the Editor:
In the opinion piece on page five of yesterday's copy of The Dartmouth, it was written, "Bones Gate is also heavily involved with Habitat for Humanity."
As cochair of Dartmouth Habitat for Humanity, I would like to clarify Bones Gate's involvement with our project.
I think it could be best said this way: for a fraternity, they are heavily involved. This means that once or twice a term five to ten brothers spend a morning or afternoon building.
To my knowledge, Bones Gate members as a group do not attend planning meetings, help with awareness programing or fund-raising drives. They build. A couple times a term.
I cannot characterize this as being "heavily involved".
I understand the desire to portray the fraternity system in a positive way in light of recent events. I do think, however, that exaggerating contributions by groups is the wrong way to go about promoting support for the fraternity system.
Don't get me wrong -- Bones Gate does build, and we appreciate that. But, once again, in no way can their involvement be deemed "heavy". To say so belittles the contributions of other members who spend 100 plus hours a term on Habitat. That is the sort of commitment I would call serious.
In the interest of truth I thought I would bring this to your attention.
