To the Editor:
We deeply regret the theme of the event our houses cosponsored on Friday, October 23. We want to reemphasize that we take full responsibility for our actions and are willing to rectify the situation in any way we can. We did not realize beforehand that the theme had such potential for offense, but we realize now that it is indeed inappropriate. We never intended for our actions to be hurtful or disrespectful, and we sincerely apologize to the community for the offense.
Furthermore, we realize why the theme is offensive and find the campus reaction justified. Most importantly, however, we know that this incident and other recent events are symptoms of a larger problem, and we would like to work with the Dartmouth community to find a solution.
We encourage the entire Dartmouth community to attend the forum at Collis Common Ground on Thursday evening to address this and other recent issues of insensitivity on campus. The meeting is an important step in finding constructive, proactive ways to avoid this problem, and our respective houses will be there to help begin this process.
