Russian film
"Alexander Nevsky," the 1938 Russian film with English subtitles by director Sergei Eisenstein, plays at the Arthur M. Loew Auditorium in the Hood Museum of Art as part of the "Eisenstein at 100: A Reconsideration" series. Russian hero Prince Nevsky combats Teutonic invaders against a score by renowned composer Prokofiev. It plays tonight at 7:00 p.m. and admission is $5 for Dartmouth students, $6 for the general public.
Musical instruments
Educator/entertainer Neal Meglathery of the Montshire Museum leads a hands-on seminar entitled "The Science of Invented Instruments." He will guide participants in the creation of their own musical instruments while teaching about science involved in sound and vibration as part of the Hop/Stop Family Series. This free workshop will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Alumni Hall in the Hopkins Center.
European art
Explore Europe with the Old Masters as the Hood Museum of Art unveils a new exhibition of the work of some of the greatest European artists Saturday. The show, a gift to the college from the Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Weil Jr. Collection of Master Prints runs through December 20 and includes masterpieces by Mantegna, Canaletto, Blake, Pissarro, Durer and Goya. Twenty-nine etchings by Rembrandt will also be included, such as "Christ Presented to the People" and "Abraham's Sacrifice." The generosity of the late Adolph Weil Jr. '35 and his wife Jean has led to one of the most notable gifts the museum has ever received.
French film
"Artemisia," the critically acclaimed1997 French film with English subtitles by Director Agnes Merlet, plays Saturday in Loew Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. It is a controversial biography of Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653), the first professional female artist in the Western world who illegally paints male nudes and falls for her mentor. Admission is $5 for Dartmouth students, $6 for the general public.
Recital
On Sunday at 4:00 p.m., the Vaughn Recital Series brings alumni Evelyn Chih-Yih Chan '77, soprano, and Merrell Wiseman, M.D. '77, pianist, to the Faulkner Recital Hall in the Hopkins Center to perform Faure's song cycle La Chanson d'Eve and songs by Franz Schreker. The admission is free.
